5 lakes, 5 reasons to visit the Verdon
Turquoise gems to discover
The Verdon is not just about its famous gorges. This exceptional region is also home to five turquoise lakes, each offering a unique view of the area. With swimming, water sports, relaxation and breathtaking scenery, the Verdon lakes are a must-see during any stay in the region.
Focus on Lake Sainte-Croix, the largest and closest to Moustiers-Sainte-Marie.
Lake Sainte-Croix: the blue giant just a stone’s throw from Moustiers
Located just a few minutes from the village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, Lake Sainte-Croix is the largest of the Verdon lakes. Created in 1973, it covers nearly 22 km² and marks the end of the Gorges du Verdon. A veritable inland sea, this artificial lake has become a major destination for green tourism in Provence.
What to do at Lake Sainte-Croix?
- Water sports: pedal boats, kayaks, paddleboards, sailing, electric boats… no combustion engines to preserve the tranquillity of the area.
- Swimming: developed and natural beaches, clear waters ideal in summer.
- Hiking and viewpoints: the paths bordering the lake offer spectacular panoramic views, particularly from the heights of Moustiers.
- Magical sunset: one of the most beautiful sights in the region.
Lake Sainte-Croix is the ideal starting point for exploring the Gorges du Verdon or simply enjoying a relaxing moment by the water.

Lake Esparron-de-Verdon: a wild setting
Further south, Lake Esparron charms visitors with its more intimate atmosphere. With its natural coves, limestone cliffs and small creeks, it almost evokes a Mediterranean setting… in the heart of Provence! Perfect for a boat trip or a picnic surrounded by nature.
Lake Quinson: peaceful and family-friendly
Fed by the Verdon River, this smaller lake is appreciated for its tranquillity. Very family-friendly, it also offers canoe trips to the Basses Gorges, as well as the famous Prehistory Museum nearby. Ideal for combining culture and nature.
Lake Chaudanne: the most secretive
Nestled just downstream from Castillon, Lake Chaudanne is the smallest and least frequented lake. It is not open for swimming, but attracts lovers of nature and tranquillity. Its steep, wooded banks offer a wild refuge, ideal for a contemplative break.
Lake Castillon: a paradise at altitude
Located at an altitude of 880 metres between Saint-André-les-Alpes and Castellane, Lake Castillon offers intensely blue waters surrounded by mountains. Little known to the general public, it remains very popular with locals for its wild beaches and peaceful swimming areas.
In the heart of the Verdon lakes
Each lake in the Verdon has its own personality, but Lake Sainte-Croix stands out for its beauty, size and proximity to Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, one of the most beautiful villages in France. Whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple or with your family, a stopover by its crystal-clear waters promises unforgettable memories.
