The Feast of the Diane
A lively morning tradition
Every year at the end of summer, the village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, one of the most beautiful in Provence, celebrates its The Feast of the Diane, the patron saint’s day of Notre-Dame de Beauvoir. The unmissable event that kicks off the festivities? The Diane, a unique musical wake-up call at dawn in the heart of the village.
What is the Diane of Moustiers?
The Diane is an ancient tradition that echoes through the streets of Moustiers on the evening of 31st August and at 5am every morning from 1st to 8th September. The Dianaïres, musicians from Moustiers, parade through the streets with drums in hand and bugles at their lips.
This magical moment, between night and day, brings locals and visitors together in an intimate and warm atmosphere, to the rhythm of percussion instruments. It is a unique popular ritual in Provence, perpetuating the link between living heritage and collective fervour. Its true meaning remains a mystery, as it can be associated with a pagan rite in homage to hunting ( Diane being the goddess of hunting) or a call to wake up in the morning (Diane coming from the Latin dies, meaning day).

The patron saint’s day of Notre-Dame de Beauvoir
The Diane precedes each day of the novena dedicated to Notre-Dame de Beauvoir, protector of the village. The highlight takes place at dawn on 8 September, with a procession leading the faithful from the village to the Notre-Dame de Beauvoir chapel, perched on the cliff, for a mass at 5am.
This chapel, listed as a Historic Monument, is a powerful symbol of the religious and cultural heritage of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie.
Why experience the Diane?
Taking part in the Diane is an authentic experience, far from the crowds and close to Provençal traditions. It is also a chance to discover the soul of the village, in a unique atmosphere combining spirituality, music, emotion and conviviality.
