The manufacture of earthenware in 5 steps

Renowned worldwide for its refinement, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie earthenware has been perpetuating a unique craftsmanship since the 17th century. Each piece, handcrafted, reflects a love of detail and a living heritage. Here are the five main stages of production that make this iconic Provençal art so rich.

Manufacturing earthenware in Moustiers

Shaping

It all starts with preparing the earthenware clay, a mixture of different types of clay. The artisans then shape each piece using the chosen technique: on the potter’s wheel for round shapes (such as plates), or moulding for objects with more complex shapes. Each creation is then carefully retouched, dried in the open air, and polished.

The first firing

Once the piece is completely dry, it is fired for the first time at approximately 1020°C. This ‘biscuit’ firing transforms the clay and prepares the piece for glazing. It becomes resistant and porous, ready to receive the glaze that will give it its characteristic shine and whiteness.

Enamelling

The piece is dipped or sprayed with a tin oxide-based glaze, which gives it the distinctive white sheen characteristic of Moustiers earthenware. Once dry, the glaze forms a smooth layer, ideal for decoration. At this stage, each piece is still fragile and must be handled with care.

The decoration

This is where the magic happens: decorators use freehand techniques and fine brushes to paint traditional or contemporary designs, sometimes with the help of light preliminary sketches. Cobalt oxide, manganese, copper and other pigments are used, revealing their colours and intensity during firing.

The second firing

Finally, the piece returns to the kiln for a second firing at around 980°C. This step vitrifies the enamel, fixes the colours, reveals the patterns and ensures the final strength of the object. The earthenware is then ready to be used, displayed… or admired!
