On 8 July 2023, Émile, aged two and a half, disappeared from a remote hamlet in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Despite a massive search and an unprecedented mobilisation of resources, the child remained missing for months. When his remains were discovered the following spring, the case took on an unprecedented legal and symbolic dimension. Even today, the circumstances of his disappearance remain unclear.
