Les espaces naturels fragiles de notre territoire

Because of its very privileged geographical situation, the territory can be "fragile" and therefore greatly impacted by human activities. In order to preserve these lands with their remarkable biodiversity, visitors of our territory must respect some precious advices reminded by the Parc Naturel Régional du Verdon.

On land, in the water and in the air... Whatever the environment involved, follow this good advice guide to ensure that you are not "harmful" to the vulnerable areas of the Verdon Park territory !

On earth

Hiking and other outdoor sports activities on land...

To be a "good hiker" (walking, biking or horseback riding...) and to protect the environment and the landscapes, it is of course necessary to respect a certain number of rules. If some of these rules are common to all the natural areas of France, others are specific to our territory... We summarize them here:

[Crédit photo : ©Pixel whippersnapper on Visualhunt]

- Let's stay on marked paths!
By deviating from marked paths & trails (GR©, PR©, etc.), hikers can potentially step on fragile plants and thus threaten the habitat of animals... → Let's follow the marked itineraries and avoid taking plants (including lavender! It is an agricultural production: ask for authorization before taking some sprigs...).

- Let's respect the environment!
In order to leave "the place as clean as you would like to find it when you arrived", let's pick up our garbage!... This might seem obvious to you, but too much waste (plastic bottles and cutlery, tissues, fruit peelings, etc.) is unfortunately still found on our hiking trails → Let's take a little "garbage bag" in our backpack and don't hesitate to report all possible pollution problems on the hiking routes with Suricate.

- Let's keep our dogs on a leash and not lead them on prohibited routes!
If keeping our dogs on a leash seems obvious to us in order to preserve the fauna and not to take the risk of disturbing the other hikers, we must also know that 3 very popular hiking itineraries of the Verdon Park are forbidden to our "canine friends"... → Let's not take these itineraries which are too "demanding" for them (because of the presence of handrails and vertical passages to cross) and are located in Natura 2000 and ENS zones: the Blanc-Martel trail, Imbut trail and Garde-Canal trail!

+ In the presence of patous, or protection dogs... → Let's adopt the good practices in order to have a good behavior towards them!

- Let's not venture on routes that are too dangerous for our young children!

In order to avoid any unnecessary risk... → Let's not go hiking with young children on the Blanc-Martel trail (firmly forbidden to children under 8 years old!) or the Imbut trail (even it it is simply "strongly discouraged" to children under 12 years old, it can be even more perilous on the famous Vidal passage...) !

Wild camping, bivouac & campfires...

Wild camping, in any form whatsoever (tent, caravanning...), is prohibited on the banks of lakes and in gorges". To avoid being fined 135€, do not hesitate to use the services of our Tourist Office (via our website, our brochure "GUIDE HÉBERGEMENT-RESTAURATION", or by asking our receptionists by phone, email or during your visit of our premises...) → We will offer available solutions to find an accommodation corresponding to your search!

+ Outside regulated camping area, you need the authorization of the owner (it can be a private owner or the municipality where you are located...).

In addition, and to prevent the risk of fire, it is strictly forbidden to light a fire in the natural areas of the Parc du Verdon! Barbecues and other campfires are strictly forbidden and are punishable by a fine of 135€. It is the same for fires linked to a badly extinguished cigarette butt... Make sure your cigarettes are perfectly extinguished, and throw them in the trash or in the little "trash bag" in your backpack!

+ For information on the closure of forest areas → Call 04 98 10 55 41 or check the maps of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence or Var departments
++ If you witness a fire start → Call 112

Favour as much as possible the "ecological means of transport"!...

« Green » modes of transport exist on Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and the Verdon territory... BV1 bus line between Riez and Castellane, Blanc-Martel shuttle, presentations of hiking, walking or biking itineraries, some ideas for outings without a car... are as many option possible !

It is also good to remember that "motorized traffic is prohibited outside the tracks provided for this purpose". The police sign B0 above materializes this traffic prohibition to any vehicle in both directions → So let's not venture on these tracks ! Finally, to practice motorized leisure activities, try to follow the eco-guards' advice.

&... beware… : « route des crêtes », the emblematic panoramic road on the right bank of the Verdon is partly closed during winter season ; generally from November 1st to April 15th (ask the Tourist Offices or the Parc du Verdon for the exact closing dates).

In Water

Swimming in the Verdon river

The Verdon can be a dangerous river because of the possible sudden variations of the water level (with the releases of the hydroelectric dams)! Bathing is prohibited by municipal order to avoid risks caused by siphons sudden movements of water (in Aiguines, Castellane, Rougon et La Palud-sur-Verdon).

Therefore, swimming and aquatic activities in autonomy (i.e. without being supervised by a professional) are totally forbidden in the gorges of Verdon and in the gorges of Baudinard! → Let's not swim in it and let's make sure to watch the children carefully when we are on the banks of the Verdon (during picnic breaks or snacks...).

+ pebble dams can be very harmful to the wildlife... → We owe it to ourselves to "let it flow!"

Water activities
