Detailed description

Sandra Baruzzi and Guglielmo Marthyn are two visionaries with their feet firmly on the ground and their eyes on the horizon, in search of beauty mixed with the wonder of experimentation.
They've been working side by side for years, sharing creative spaces, events, thoughts, words and passions.
They are driven by the same rigour and work ethic, punctuated by flashes of imagination and playful acrobatics. They both give shape to their poetic visions, while retaining their own individuality.
They share without mixing, and it's impossible to confuse them.

Sandra Baruzzi, an activist in the field of art and poetry, has been an independent curator at the ‘chantier des Arts’ in Castellamonte since 2016, where she has lived and worked since 1986.
There she worked as a teacher of ceramic art design at the National Art High School.
She devotes herself assiduously and on a daily basis to art and literature, producing sculptures, poetic essays, multidisciplinary events and performances in which the viewer is involved and sometimes becomes an actor in the work itself.

Sandra Baruzzi expresses herself through themes that are particularly dear to her, linked to literature, social issues and collective visions.
It is in this sense that her works can be metaphorically compared to a journey: as you travel, the accumulation of experiences and the discovery of new things lead you to reflect on yourself and your environment, to fix your gaze and your attention on the other person or on the landscape.

Architecture is a recurring theme, with its houses, lighthouses and towers, buildings that take us back to surreal, childlike places: the shapes, colours and locations are reminiscent of dreamlike scenes, a little realistic and a little fantastic.
The windows have a special meaning: they are the ‘eyes on the world’, the symbol of open-mindedness, desire and the ability to look ‘outside’ without shutting ourselves in.
The windows are the only way for the outside world to come into contact with us, and symbolise our readiness to receive stimuli and impressions.
The staircase, which rises endlessly, as if representing an attempt, a desire to get closer to infinity. The staircase expresses both upward and downward movement. The staircase becomes a means of returning to reality, to our roots and our earthly origins.
Nature, always in dialogue with man and his creations, is the often silent and invisible driving force behind his creative universe.
His collections are full of symbolic elements, archetypes of the human psyche that help and guide the viewer to read the message conveyed by the work.

Guglielmo Marthyn, who held the Chair of Design at the National Institute of Art in Castellamonte from 1974 to 2009, currently creates thematic sculptures in ceramic stoneware. These are works in which the playful and aesthetic aspects are combined with a taste for design, ongoing research into materials and the value of a unique work of art in which a link is felt between dreams, fairy tales and play.
By nature, Guglielmo Marthyn loves to experiment and continues to seek out innovative techniques and tools, which has led him to undertake 3D modelling and porcelain printing in the field of design, opening up new artistic horizons.

Guglielmo Marthyn's ceramics and his characters often seem to be the fruit of a ‘child's’ imagination, they seem to have stepped, for a moment, out of fairy tales.
An enchanted world where the sculptures have an evocative power and become stories for each and every one of us, based on our experience and our ability to fantasise; in short, they involve us emotionally and make us dream of times gone by.

The narrative value of his characters is the most accurate reading of his work. They are surrounded by natural elements, trees, moons, birds... The trees, animals and enchanted fruit are all part of a great choral narrative, and at the same time, each character has his or her own story to tell and pass on.
Inspiration from fairy tales and ancient stories is the common thread running through a vast and long-developed body of work. These are worlds where universes populated by symbols, metaphors and parables take shape, allowing us to enter into deep contact with our emotional world. A tale that can be brought to life by those who, with an attentive eye, can become children for a moment and allow themselves the luxury of dreaming.

Places of memory are mentioned and suggested because they are ancient roots that lead to the witnessing of present-day life in a lively and valued comparison, certainly a poetics of life that is optimistic, serene and determined.
